Columbia River

Drypoint

After driving for two hours across a tree-less plain, much of it now irrigated for arable crops, suddenly there is the Columbia River. This vast river has cut a huge gorge in this flat and extensive plain with just one crossing for many miles. The Artist climbed some way down the steep side of the gorge to scratch the image into the aluminium plate. He was particularly taken by the unusual bridge design set in this sparsely inhabited land.
